1. Disconnect negative battery cable. If vehicle is equipped with dual batteries, disconnect both negative battery cables. Drain cooling system. See COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING.
2. On vehicles with A/C, discharge A/C system using approved refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment. See RECOVERY, EVACUATION & RECHARGING in GENERAL SERVICING PROCEDURES article in GENERAL SERVICING.
3. On all vehicles, disconnect the air charge cooler inlet and outlet pipes. See Fig. 73. Label and disconnect the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector, Manifold
Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor electrical connector and the pressure hoses. See Fig. 74.
4. Loosen the compressor manifold clamps and remove the compressor manifold. Remove and discard the compressor manifold “O” ring seal. See Fig. 75.
5. Partially drain the cooling system. See COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING. Remove the wing bolt and lug wrench. Squeeze the clamp and remove the overflow hose.
6. Remove the degas bottle retaining bolts. See Fig. 6. Squeeze the clamp and remove the degas bottle supply hose. Remove the degas bottle.
7. Note accessory drive belt routing and remove the accessory drive belt and belt tensioner.
8. On vehicles with dual generators, remove the engine ground cable, nut and the starter wire retainer bracket. See Fig. 16. Remove the lower generator mounting bracket retaining bolts and the mounting bracket. See Fig. 105.
9. On vehicles with A/C, disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector. Disconnect the A/C manifold and tube assembly from the compressor. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts. See Fig. 108. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
10. On all vehicles, remove the glow plug relay/intake air heater relay and bracket as an assembly. See Fig. 106. Remove the valve cover. See VALVE COVERS.
11. Remove the rocker arms and push rods. See ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY & PUSH ROD. Remove the fuel supply line retaining strap nut. See Fig. 109. Disconnect the fuel supply line. See Fig. 102.
12. Remove the ground strap from the rear of the cylinder head. Disconnect the heater hoses.
Remove the fuel injectors. See FUEL INJECTORS. Using the special tool, disconnect the high pressure oil line. See Fig. 99.
13. Remove the exhaust backpressure tube. See Fig. 107. Using the High Pressure Line Disconnect Tool (303-625), disconnect the high pressure oil line. See Fig. 99.
14. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the nuts and bolts from the exhaust manifold and the exhaust inlet pipe. See Fig. 98. Lower the vehicle.
15. Remove the 4 fuel injector retaining studs. Disconnect the glow plug electrical connector and remove the glow plug from the cylinder head. See Fig. 103. Clean and inspect the glow plug tip for damage.
16. Remove the 18 cylinder head bolts. Position the Cylinder Head Lifting Tool (303-D098, D94T-6000-B), on the cylinder head. See Fig. 104. Install the cylinder head lifting tool bolts. Install the Heavy Duty Floor Crane (014- 00071).
17. Using the heavy duty floor crane, with an assistant, lift the cylinder head and remove it from
the vehicle. Clean and inspect the cylinder head mating surface.
