1. Disconnect negative battery cable. If vehicle is equipped with dual batteries, disconnect both negative battery cables. Drain cooling system. See COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING.
2. Remove the air inlet tube, duct and inlet duct bracket and turbocharger intake tube. See Fig. 73.
3. Label and disconnect the intake air heater element electrical leads, Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector, Manifold Absolute Temperature (MAP) sensor electrical connector and the pressure hoses. See Fig. 74.
4. Loosen the compressor manifold clamps and remove the compressor manifold. Remove and discard the compressor manifold “O” ring seal. See Fig. 75.
5. Remove the upper radiator hose. Note accessory drive belt routing and remove accessory drive belt. Disconnect the power steering lines from power steering pump.
6. Disconnect the generator electrical connections. Remove the generator mounting bracket bolts. See Fig. 17. Remove the generator mounting bracket.
7. Using the High Pressure Line Disconnect Tool (303-625), disconnect the high pressure oil line. See Fig. 99. Disconnect the injection pressure sensor electrical connector. See Fig. 100. Remove the valve cover. See VALVE COVERS.
8. Remove the rocker arms and push rods. See ROCKER ARM ASSEMBLY & PUSH ROD. Remove the fuel injectors. See FUEL INJECTORS. Remove the fuel supply line retainer bolt. See Fig. 101.
9. Disconnect the fuel supply tube. See Fig. 102. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the nuts and bolts from the exhaust manifold and the exhaust inlet pipe. See Fig. 98. Lower the vehicle.
10. Remove the 4 fuel injector retaining studs. Disconnect the glow plug electrical connector and remove the glow plug from the cylinder head. See Fig. 103. Clean and inspect the glow plug tip for damage.
11. Remove the 18 cylinder head bolts. Position the Cylinder Head Lifting Tool (303-D098, D94T-6000-B), on the cylinder head. See Fig. 104. Install the cylinder head lifting tool bolts. Install the Heavy Duty Floor Crane (014- 00071).
12. Using the heavy duty floor crane, with an assistant, lift the cylinder head and remove it from the vehicle. Clean and inspect the cylinder head mating surface.
